Trauma-Informed Yoga: An 8-Week Healing Journey

Our 8-week Trauma-Informed Yoga program is an evidence-based series designed to support individuals in regulating the nervous system, rewiring neural pathways, and fostering resilience. Rooted in the latest research on trauma, neuroplasticity, and mind-body healing, this program offers a safe, structured, and compassionate approach to movement and mindfulness.

The Science Behind the Practice

Trauma impacts the brain by altering the function of the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, often leaving the nervous system in a heightened state of fight, flight, or freeze. This program integrates:

  • Neuroscience of Trauma – Understanding how trauma affects the brain and body.
  • Nervous System Regulation – Gentle, intentional movement to restore a sense of safety and balance.
  • Neuroplasticity & Healing – Using yoga and breathwork to create new neural pathways, supporting emotional resilience and well-being.

What to Expect

Each session is carefully structured to be trauma-sensitive, allowing participants to engage in gentle, choice-based movement, breathwork, and mindfulness practices designed to restore a sense of safety, self-awareness, and empowerment. Participants will learn:

  • Grounding techniques to regulate the nervous system
  • Breathwork for emotional balance
  • Somatic awareness practices to reconnect with the body
  • Mindful movement to support neural rewiring

Who Is This For?

This program is ideal for anyone who has experienced stress, trauma, PTSD, or chronic nervous system dysregulation, as well as those seeking a holistic approach to healing. No prior yoga experience is required—just an openness to explore healing through movement and breath.

Restorative Yoga: Deep Relaxation for Mind, Body, and Soul

Restorative yoga is a deeply healing practice designed to activate the body’s natural relaxation response, promoting nervous system regulation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Unlike more active styles of yoga, restorative yoga focuses on stillness, breath awareness, and passive stretching, using props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks to fully support the body in longer-held poses.

The Science & Spirituality of Restorative Yoga

Chronic stress keeps the body in a heightened state of fight-or-flight, which can contribute to fatigue, anxiety, inflammation, and nervous system dysregulation. Restorative yoga engages the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), shifting the body into a state of deep rest and repair. On a physiological level, this process:

  • Reduces cortisol and stress hormones
  • Enhances vagal tone for nervous system balance
  • Improves sleep quality and emotional resilience
  • Supports pain relief and physical healing

Beyond the science, restorative yoga is a sacred practice of surrender, allowing you to let go of tension, quiet the mind, and reconnect with your inner wisdom. By creating stillness in the body, we open space for spiritual reflection, intuitive insight, and deep energetic healing. Each posture becomes a gateway to presence, trust, and profound inner peace—an opportunity to listen to the whispers of the soul.

What to Expect in a Restorative Yoga Class

Each session is a gentle, meditative experience, incorporating:

Fully supported postures that allow for effortless relaxation

  • Breathwork techniques to calm the mind and regulate the nervous system
  • Guided meditation and mindfulness to deepen awareness and inner peace
  • Energetic alignment to restore balance and harmony within

Who Benefits from Restorative Yoga?

This practice is ideal for anyone experiencing stress, anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue, or emotional overwhelm. It is also a wonderful complement to other healing modalities, helping to restore balance, resilience, and overall well-being.

In the stillness of restorative yoga, we remember our connection to something greater—our breath, our heart, our spirit. This is a practice of renewal, a return to self, and a homecoming to inner peace.

Yin Yoga: Deep Release for Mind, Body, and Spirit

Yin yoga is a meditative and deeply healing practice that invites stillness, introspection, and profound energetic release. Unlike more dynamic yoga styles, yin focuses on long-held, passive postures that target the fascia, connective tissues, and energetic meridians of the body. By softening into each pose, we allow for physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation—creating space for deep surrender, self-discovery, and balance.

The Science & Spirituality of Yin Yoga

Physically, yin yoga works on the deep connective tissues, joints, and ligaments, promoting:

  • Increased flexibility and mobility by gently stressing fascia and joints
  • Enhanced circulation and energy flow through meridian activation
  • Nervous system regulation by shifting into a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state
  • Greater resilience and emotional balance through stillness and mindfulness

From an energetic perspective, yin yoga aligns with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), working with the body's meridian lines to release stagnant energy, restore balance, and harmonize the flow of Qi (life force energy). By surrendering into each posture, we quiet the mind, dissolve energetic blockages, and tap into our innate wisdom and intuition.

What to Expect in a Yin Yoga Class

Each session is a slow, meditative journey inward, integrating:

  • Long-held postures (2-5 minutes) to encourage deep release
  • Breath awareness to cultivate presence and calm the nervous system
  • Mindfulness and meditation to quiet the mind and connect with intuition
  • Energetic balancing to clear blockages and restore flow

Who Benefits from Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is ideal for those seeking stress relief, improved flexibility, deep relaxation, or energetic healing. It is especially beneficial for individuals who feel overstimulated, anxious, or disconnected, offering a sacred space to slow down, reflect, and restore.

In the quiet depths of yin yoga, we soften, release, and reconnect—not just with our bodies, but with our true essence. This practice teaches us patience, surrender, and the beauty of simply being.

Vinyasa Flow: Bridging Level 1 and Level 2

  • Greater mobility and flexibility through intentional movement

Beyond the physical, Vinyasa Flow is a meditation in motion—a practice of presence, patience, and self-discovery. By learning to navigate the flow of postures with grace and breath awareness, we also learn to embrace change and transition in life with greater ease.

Lydia

I have always struggled with being comfortable in the present. For years I have attached my self-worth to being productive, developing into a very unhealthy workaholic. I struggled with asserting my boundaries and lost my voice trying to do it all. I found yoga by accident, I followed a friend to a yoga class not believing too deeply in its ability to provide any structure to myself. I was quickly humbled. In yoga class, I found freedom in being present. I discovered the solace in those moments on my mat where simply being there was enough. Through my yoga training, I discovered a community that uplifts each other as we are in our present state.

As I invested in my yoga journey and education as a hatha, yin, and children yoga instructor I regained my voice. It was because of the breathwork that I learned through my training that I was blessed enough to walk away from rolling my car on an icy highway. That further led me into trauma yoga as I struggled with the effects of a concussion and nerve damage.

I am thrilled to bring Vinyasa yoga to New Mindset Therapy and Yoga. Vinyasa simply means alignment of breath through movement. It is a style for those who love to move and who feel restless being still. My flows change daily because we are different daily. I find inspiration through the sessions and energy levels of the group I’m working with. We will focus on our breath to reconnect with our bodies. My motto is: sometimes you have to take a breath to find your voice. I am currently working towards a Master's in Literacy to help children who are struggling with learning disabilities.

Jill

I began my personal yoga journey in 2008 and over the next 7 years cultivated a deeply

rewarding and meaningful home practice, guided by some of my beloved Youtube teachers. It was these moments, on my kitchen floor with my children crawling under me in bridge or through my legs in a warrior stance that yoga became a part of who I am, etched within my body and soul. In 2015, the opportunity arose for me to embark on my own yoga teacher training with Kathryn Bruni Young, and so 7 years into my practice I attended my first ever yoga class during our training. I was called to the training as part of my own personal journey of spiritual, mental and physical growth. However, at times the path we are meant to take unfolds before us and so, when I was asked by Kathryn to teach at her studio, I did not hesitate. I was also blessed with the opportunity to be part of the guest teaching faculty at one of Kathryn’s later teacher trainings and also at one of her Summer Intensives.

Although I stepped away from formal teaching over the past few years, I have had several wonderful opportunities to continue to create that sacred space of healing, connection, restoration and joy through a number of benevolent opportunities including bi-weekly yoga for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and special workshops in the school setting and with Girls Guides.

For me, yoga lives and breathes within my being, each posture emanating from my own intuitive knowing, a beautiful dance woven through breath and movement on my mat, honouring the needs and limitations of my own wonderfully aging body moment by moment. Given the duration and consistency of my practice, I have come to fully embrace the importance of honouring our ever shifting emotional, physical and mental health each time we step on the mat. This dynamism underscores the importance of choice, empowerment, and voice when attending a class. It is here that my professional journey as a clinical therapist and social worker has expanded my own personal practice, and who I am as a yoga teacher. My recent specialization in Yoga for Trauma has transformed the entirety of my own approach as we come to fully understanding the nature of trauma and its embededness within the human nervous system and body. It is not this trauma informed perspective that guides who I

am as practitioner and teacher.

It has been an interesting dance, in my journey as both yogi and clinician, walking two seemingly separate and distinct paths, one espousing the strengths of western mental health modalities, the other rooted in eastern holistic traditions. Most cognitive therapies used in our clinical practice encapsulate the essence of the dharma wheel, of repetitive thought, of the power of the inner being and mind. Yoga extends this through the wisdom of Buddhist and ayurvedic thought and philosophy, yet invites us to bring back in the body, a fundamental component of true mental health and healing. The importance of the body in healing has come to the forefront of mental health in recent years. It would seem that yoga always had it entirely right, and so these two worlds are finally coming together, as two key aspects of healing, one always slightly incomplete without the other. And so what a gift, for me, to be able to finally reconcile these two parts of myself, and bring them together at New Mindset Yoga.
